How can I get the login prompt back in Win95/98?

[color navy]TO GET THE NETWORK PROMPT BACK (For a [color #800000]WINDOWS[/color] prompt scroll to the bottom):[/color]

[color #800000]First, let's cover the basics. In order for you to receive a network prompt at bootup, your network configuration (network stack) must look similar the one in the example above. To check yours, right-click Network Neighborhood on your desktop and choose Properties.

[ol][li]Make sure Client for MS Networks is listed and you at least have one "network" adapter (in the example, it's the 3COM adapter). Also, make sure the Primary Network Logon is set to Client for Microsoft Networks.

[li]Highlight "Client for Microsoft Networks" and click Properties. Verify that quick logon is NOT selected. Check "Log on to Windows NT Domain" and enter the appropriate Domain information if necessary.

[li]Click OK twice and DO NOT REBOOT when prompted.

[li]Right-Click My Computer on your desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Device Manager tab and expand the Network Adapters section. Make sure your NIC adapter isn't disabled (red X through its icon). If it is disabled, double-click it and take out the checkmark next to "Disable in this hardware profile". Click OK, then close.

[li]Go to Start->Find->Files and Folders. Type *.pwl in the Named field, have C: in the Look In field, and click Find Now. Delete all results.

[li]Browse to C:\Windows and open System.ini in Notepad. Scroll down to the section entitled [Password Lists] and remove any lines regarding PWL files. Close notepad saving changes.

[li]Enter your registry by going to Start -> Run and typing regedit. Look for the following key and delete it if it exists:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Network \ Real Mode Net \ AutoLogon[/li]

[color black]Note: Take extra care whenever editing your registry. It's always a good idea to back it up before making any changes.[/color]


[li]Empty your recycle bin and reboot. You should now get a "Microsoft Networking" dialog box. If not, don't hesitate to post a new thread!
