Why can't I mark an item as corrected from a CIM workstation?

Why can't I mark an item as corrected from a CIM workstation?

by  Ramjet  Posted    (Edited  )
I used Compaq Smart Start install script to build my new Compaq servers and it automatically installs the Compaq Insight Manager Server Side files. I installed CIM on my workstation so I can remotely monitor the server and it won't even connect. What is going wrong and how do I fix it?

This scenario actually happened to me and I was very surprised to find how little help was available for CIM. I now have the entire production systems being monitored by CIM but there are several key factors not to be found in any documentation I found.

#1. I checked to make sure the SNMP protocol is installed. The Compaq Smart Start does this but I wanted to make sure.

#2. I next checked compaq.com and found that there were updates to this version of CIM. I updated both Server side and Client side to the most current versions. This got me connectivity but it did allow me to mark items as corrected.

#3. This is the big one. I wanted to check to make sure the community strings were matching both server side and client side. I felt that they must match or I wouldn't get any connectivity at all. I did however want to get them changed from the default of "public" and so I began trying to find out how to do this. I saw only a few articles concerning this and for my systems they were inaccurate. To change the community string on a W2K server using CIM 5.2 you need to open the services console. Find the SNMP service and in the properties go to the security tab. Click on edit and changed the community string. I then changed it on workstation CIM and achieved a successful connection.

#4. I still however couldn't mark items corrected and finally after a few hours of reading called Compaq. In the same location as #3 you can also modify the SNMP rights to Read-Create. This was the final missing piece and my CIM installation is now working properly.
