When configuring a wireless card on an XP machine, if you are using a vendor provided configuration utility, you must first disable XP controls for the adapter. These exist for both the card's settings and authentication type.
By default, XP takes control of the adapter's settings ( SSID, WEP ) and enables 802.1X authentication.
Most AP's out in the market are not set to use EAP authentication ( remote authentication to a RADIUS server)
These controls can be disabled by going to the Network Icon, selecting the wireless card/ Properties, which will allow you to access the cards settings and then selecting the Authentication tab to remove 802.1X authentication.
