Function Isn't Available in Expressions in Query Expression

by  Magellan  Posted    (Edited  )
Getting this Error is like receiving the message ôResistance is Futileö over your hailing frequency. Assimilation looked indeed the dim destiny (not a variable sillyà) till some smart guys deemed MVPs stepped in to brush aside the æfutilityÆ aspect in this process. Kudos to Michel and Douglas J Steele who braved the monotony of my requests and delivered the goods. While Michel suggested some good design changes, Douglas provided some valuable links. Mind you, however that by the time Douglas aired his links, I had been successful in nabbing the ever persistent [borg2] . Ohh...yesàyou were there with me Lieutenant Data! DÆs links cleaned the black soot of ignorance æn provided the necessary wisdom [yoda] . Only time æn pending projects shall stand witness to anything which I have absorbed from these guys. DonÆt forget MichaelRed who persevered all the way and actually came up with design changes which had the faint background echo of Michel thread702-434901
Then there was RickSpr who helped with a brilliant one liner which had completely slipped my mind (easy to say...) thread705-435356
Thanx also to mwolf00 whoàsort of lit the lamp you know. [idea] thread707-432524
Well, I wonÆt bother you any further with prologuesàletÆs get on with the show, shall we? What I intend to do here is to provide you with some revealing links to the actual nature of the problem æn certainly other absolutely related problemos. Otherwise its gonna take pages to write down the entire stuff. Here r they:

ACC97: Error Message: Function Isn't Available in Expressions in Query Expression http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;194374
Although this one deals with Access97, it really transcends versions.
ACC97: MDE Database Must Be Recompiled Under Current Service Release http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;246169

These r specific to Access10 (am using Office10 Dev) but you will get the links to other versions in the articles. However the concept remains the same.
ACC2002: How Access 2002 Resolves Visual Basic for Application References
Article-286300
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en=us;286300

ACC2002: VBA Functions Break in a Database with Missing References Article-283806 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en=us;283806

ACC2002: ôUndefined Function in Expressionö Error Message When You Open a Query That References a Function Article-275110 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en=us;275110

These apart the referencing problem could be pointing towards appropriate DAO configuration. You can check my other FAQ faq705-2958
This gives the code for re-registering DAO on the startup of your application. And there are freewares on the web which check the nature of references, dependencies in your application 'n some are good.
[color red]There are guys who take great pains to make sure we take less. Nonetheless the experience is rewarding.[/color]
