How to remotely connect to S8700 series servers

The 8700 series remote connections differ from the G3 series switches as you must create a RAS connection to remotely access these. Here are the steps involved in doing this.

1. Go to ôStart, then ôMy network placesö (Windows XP).
2. Go into ôview network connectionsö.
3. ôCreate a new connectionö
4. Using the connection wizard, next, ôconnect to the network at my workplaceö (using VPN or modem dialup connection), next, dialup connection, next, company name, next, phone number (INADS line number to servers), next, anyoneÆs use, next, add shortcut to the desk top, next and hit finish.
5. At this point the connection should be ready to use but you have one more change to make before you can. While the connection window is up, go to ôpropertiesö and then the security window. At the bottom check the ôshow terminal windowö. You are now through with this the network connection part of this.
6. Open your connection up from the shortcut on your desktop. The user name and password part should be blank. Now hit ôDialö. This may take a few seconds to place and connect.
7. Now you should have the ôAfter dial terminal windowö up and the login screen appear. Enter the login xxxxxxx, (wait for this to take) and then enter the password xxxxxxx. (Be patient as this is dialup) and the login and password will probably not be the same as what you are using for the switch.
8. After the login and password has been accepted hit the ôdone buttonö. The connection has now been made.
9. Now in the new connection (bottom right hand corner of you screen), you should see the connection. If you place your mouse pointer over it, the connection speed will be shown. Double click this connection, and go into ôdetails.
10. Under the ôdetails tab, look at the server IP address. Write this down.
11. In your ASA or the newer Integrated Management software, create a new connection to the switch. Make this a ônetwork connectionö. The Host should be the IP address you wrote down from your connection. The port should be 5023 or whatever port number you are using for your normal connections using ASA or Integrated site Management .

You are now ready to use your remote connection to your servers.
