Simple Network Management Protocol û SNMP can be used to retrieve information about Avaya 46XX IP phones. There are many vendors selling SNMP tools that will retrieve SNMP information.
SNMP - The Internet standard protocol developed to manage and retrieve information on nodes (servers, workstations, routers, switches, hubs & IP Phones etc.) on an IP network.
MIB - A collection of SNMP Object ID's (OID) that are usually related
OID - It is a unique identifier for an item of information that is part of a MIB.

Avaya provides a MIB for the 46XX IP phones. The MIB file is called 46xxmib18.mib û it is included in Avaya IP Telephone Release 091503 and TFTP Server.
This FAQ uses a free SNMP tool called SNMPView û ( download @ http://www.snmpview.de/snmpview.zip ). I chose this tool because of itÆs price û free and it is a simple way to introduce yourself to SNMP. This tool could be used to diagnose a problem with an IP phone. The site is in German but SNMPView has documentation in English.
Download SNMPView and install and read instructions.
Modify file - devices.txt
Example entry
111.111.111.1111;46XX IP phone;public;0
IP Address of the phone; Name given to the Device; the Community name is public; OID table number is zero
Modify file û snmpview.cfg with Notepad
Read through this file. Use this file to set refresh rate, logging options, email notification etc.

Start SNMPView and you will begin to collect SNMP information on your Avaya 46XX IP phone
Let examine what those entries mean. Look at entry 3.
[Header] 3=Model û This is a text description of the OID
[OID0] 3=1.3.6.1.4.1.6889.2.69.1.1.2.0 û This is the OID assigned in the MIB for Model Identifier
Look on page 1 of 46xxmib18.mib look for the term ôendptMODELö
Look at file - oids.txt for other OID's. If no information is gathered using these OID's try adding a .1 to the end for info on Ethernet port 1 and .2 for Ethernet port 2
