How to telnet to a Definity from a PC?

Most people already know about ProComm Plus for Windows (and probably DOS). You can use the ATT4410 emulation. When you connect to the Definity you must select the 4410 option.

It works and you can use a modem or telnet. It has the advantage that the Function key assignments are visible at the bottom of the screen.

ProComm is now quite a large application and it's interface is not very friendly.

I wanted to find an alternative, preferably free, that I could use primarily to telnet, using a C-LAN card on the Definity.

I tried to find the Definity Site Administrator and other Avaya products but they are either paid for or now not available!

With a little effort I have managed to modify a free telnet application to support the bare minimum required for the AT&T 513 emulation on the Definity. The 513 terminal type is the default, so that is the easiest.

I found 'Tera Term Pro' on the telnet section of http://www.download.com
It's a free VT100 Terminal Emulation programme.

I created a custom Keyboard file, by adding the following lines to the existing Keyboard.cnf file and calling it AT513KEY.CNF:

[User keys]
; AT&T513 Terminal For Avaya Definity
; F1 = Cancel
User1=59,0,$1BOw
; F3 = Enter and Save
User2=61,0,$1BSB
; F5 = Help
User3=63,0,$1BOm
; F7 = Next Page
User4=65,0,$1B[U
; F8 = Previous Page
User5=66,0,$1B[V
; Useful changes for the PC keyboard to suit the Avaya Definity
; Delete = Cancel
User6=339,0,$1BOw
; Keypad Enter = Enter and Save
User7=284,0,$1BSB
; Insert = Help
User8=338,0,$1BOm
; Page Down = Next Page
User9=337,0,$1B[U
; Page Up = Previous Page
User10=329,0,$1B[V
; F6 key is not a standard escape sequence!
; F6 = Edit (Used for Change Vector)
User11=64,0,$1Bf6

You also have to rem out the original keys using the same keycodes see the [VT function keys] section of the CNF file.

I also configured the title as a reminder of what the function keys do and saved a new ini file. Use a few command line options to save time and it works fine:

"C:program Files\TTERMPRO\ttermpro.exe" 192.168.10.10:5111 /K=AT513KEY.CNF /F=Avaya.ini

:5111 is the port number instead of port 23.

There's lots of info with Tera Term Pro and it's a small app, and although it has a setup programme, I copied all the files to the network so I can run it from anywhere without installation.

It's not a perfect emulation, but is good enough.
