Initial PRI Configuration

1. Set DS1 Frame Format to Extended Super Frame.
Lines Trunks>>LS/GS/DS1>>Enter Slot + Enter>>Frame Format>>Extended Super Frame>>Enter.
2. Set DS1 Suppression:
Lines/Trunks>>LS/GS/DS1>>Enter Slot + Enter>>Suppression>>B8ZS>>Enter.
3: Change DS1 Type from T1 to PRI:
Lines/Trunks>>LS/GS/DS1>>Enter Slot + Enter>>Type=>PRI>>Enter.
WARNING: Do not ever change from PRI to T1 without undoing steps 5 and 6.
4. Set Expected Network Switch Type:
>>Lines/Trunks>>PRI>>Switch Type>>Make choice + Enter.
This should take you back to the main PRI menu. This is information we must get from the Carrier in order to program.
5. Program B-Channels into B- Channel Group:
PRI>>B-Channel Group>>B-Channel>>When prompted for B-channel group, type 1 + Enter>>When prompted for B-Channels, enter in the form:
Slot/channel(sspp); Starting with B-Channel 23 and working down to B-Channel 1. Example: if slot is 4, type 0423, enter, 0422, enter, 0421, enter, etc.
Return to B-Channel Group menu.
6. Program PRI Trunks into B Channel Group:
>>Lines>>when prompted for B-Channel group, type 1+ Enter>>enter line trunks (1st 23 only, starting from bottom working up). Return to B-Channel Group menu. (Use Entry Mode if necessary)
7. Set Network Service for B-Channel Group:
>>Ntwk Svc>>when prompted for B-Channel group, type 1 + Enter>> Misc >>CallByCall>>Enter.
Return to B-Channel Group menu.
8. Set PRI Incoming Routing:
>>Incoming Rtg>>Dial Plan>>Enter.
If expecting incoming DNIS digits, use Dial Plan Routing option (example: DIDs)
Exit back through B-Channel menu to main PRI menu.
9. Program Incoming Dial Plan Routing for Any Service:
>>Dial Plan Routing>>Service>> when prompted for entry #, type 0>>Misc >>Any>>Enter
Exit back through Dial Plan Routing menu to main PRI menu.
10. Program Outgoing Call By Call Service Table:
>>Outgoing Table>>CBC Svc>>Pattern>>when prompted for list and entry numbers, enter 00>>Enter. When prompted for pattern number, enter: 0 then Next(F9) >>1>>Next>>2>>Next...........8>>Next>>9>>Enter.
11. Set Outgoing Network Service for CBC Table:
>>Outgoing Table>>CBC Svc >>Ntwk Svc>>When prompted for List Number, enter 0>>Misc>>No Service>>Enter (This is a generic setting only, and may not work for if AT&T is the service provider. You may need to determine the specific AT&T services the customer has ordered and program them on this table.)
If this is a local/general use PRI, you need to change the Special Service Table as follows:
PRI>>Outgoing Table>>Special Svc>>Del Digit>>When prompted for entry number, enter 0 + Enter. change entry to 0>>Next>>change entry to 0, etc until all entries, 0-7 are 0. Then go to Type of Number>> When prompted for entry number, enter 0 + Enter. Change entry from International to National and press Enter.(This is not universally true of all local providers, although it is generally the case.)
If this is a strictly long-distance PRI, leave the Del Digit values at default. (Exception: If the carrier needs us to absorb the leading 1, Special Service Table 5 should be set to Delete 1. If not, SS Table 5 should be set to Delete 0. FYI: ATT commonly requires 10-digit dialing) .(This is not universally true of all long distance providers, although it is generally the case.) (International calls may or may not be treated the same.)
Important:
If Switch Type is 5ESS, the Central Office protocol on the 5ESS MUST be set for ATT Custom. We DO NOT EVER support ATT National Protocol (aka NI 1 )
Suggestion: Ask them if they are set for ATT National Protocol.
The protocol translations can be found on Page 196, View 5.2, Field 2, if the 5ESS is a version 13 (most common at this time)
If the switch type is DMS-100 or DMS-250, the CO protocol MUST be set for NTNAPRI. (Northern Telecom North American PRI protocol), unless the switch is emulating a 5ESS, or 4ESS, in which case they would be U459PRI or U449PRI, respectively. The protocol translations for the DMS-100 can be found in table LTDEF, parameter variant.
Also, the field for L1 Flags in the Trunk Sub-Group table should be set to Yes.
This is more critical when using DS1 cards with an Apparatus code beginning with "517M" and later. These particular DS1 boards WILL NOT work properly without this parameter for L1 Flags, set.

First assign port options (Default setting are V.35 and 64K)

Press Right Arrow and continue until you reach the first Data channel you wish to assign. You will see for example:

PRT1 PRT1 PRT1 etc. Pressing the button toggles between PRT1 and a dash (" - ")
As before, press Right Arrow to continue, and then press Double Arrow Up>>Save (Yes>>To Active.
Assign Voice Channels
Double Arrow Up>>Config>>Active>>Edit>>Right Arrow>>Channel>>DTE>>Assign
You will see:

Push the buttons beneath N1, N2, N3, and you will see:

Continue until all of the necessary voice channels have been mapped. It is important to mention that if you are setting up the DSU/CSU for use with PRI, then Network channel 24 must be mapped to DTE channel 24. Otherwise the D-Channel will not function. Then Press Double Arrow Up>>Save (Yes) >> To Active.
Assign Voice Channels as RBS or DATA
Double Arrow Up>>Config>>Active>>Edit>>Right Arrow>>Channel>>DTE>>Voice
You will see (if still in default mode):

Pressing the button beneath the setting you wants to adjust toggles between RBS and DATA. Press Right Arrow to continue, then press: Press Double Arrow Up>>Save (Yes)>>To Active.
For T1 configurations (TIE, DID, Loop Start, Ground Start), all voice channels should be set to RBS. If Data is being dropped and inserted, Data channels (PRT1, PRT2) should be set to DATA.
For PRI configurations all channels (Voice and Data) should be set to DATA .
Assign Clock Source
To set the clocking source for the DSU/CSU press:
Double Arrow Up>>Config>>Active>>Edit>>Right Arrow>> Right Arrow>> GEN>>
NEXT >> Assign to NET or DTE or Internal
Then press Double Arrow Up>>Save (Yes) >> To Active
Assign Framing and Coding
To Assign or verify Framing or Coding on DTE settings press:
Double Arrow Up>>Config>>Active>>Edit>>DTE>> Set Framing to ESF or B8ZS >>NEXT>> Set Coding to D4 or AMI
When finished, press: Double Arrow Up>>Save (Yes) >>To Active.
To Assign or verify Framing or Coding on NET settings press:
Double Arrow Up>>Config>>Active>>Edit>>NET>> Set Framing to ESF or B8ZS >>NEXT>> Set Coding to D4 or AMI
When finished press: Double Arrow Up>>Save (Yes) >>To Active.
When all programming is complete, press Double Arrow Up, and Screen will time out and return to idle state.
PRI Tips
What to try if the customer has PRI facility and reports:
They cannot dial international long distance calls.
On some PRI facilities, it is necessary, in the Special Service Table, to change the "Type Of Number" entry for international calling (entry 0), from "international" (I) to "national" (N).
They can dial local calls, but are unable to dial out long-distance(any).
Check the "Digits To Delete" section of the Special Service Table. If there are digits being deleted, change all the values to 0. These digits send the dialing prefix(011, 01, 1, etc.) so the T1 carrier knows how to process the call, and are needed by some(mostly local)providers. If the T1 is maintained by a long distance company like AT&T or Sprint, the prefix is not generally used so they are deleted.
Everything in programming looks good, but they are still unable to call in or out. Provider may report that they cannot see the "D" channel.
Verify with the vendor that the "Switch Type" is correct, and that the appropriate protocol is being used. The protocol for DMS-100 and other Nortel switches is "NTNAPRI" The protocol for 5ESS and other AT&T switches is "AT&T Custom". If the DS1 card being used has an Apparatus Code starting with 517M, or N, an additional paramater that must be set if the "Switch Type" is DMS-100: The field "L1 flags" in the "Trunk Sub-Group" table MUST be set to "yes".
After a reset of 100DS1 card, a cold-start of switch(intentional or due to power failure), or after a brief disconnection of cabling for loop-back testing, the T1 appears to come back up but calls cannot be made in or out.
When a PRI connection is lost(for whatever reason) the T1 will normally reset itself and rebuild the connection to the Legend. To do this, the "D" channel is established first, and then the "B" channels are brought up either one-at-a-time, or globally(all-at-once). This is particularly significant because the success of the restart is entirely switch dependent. If the switch is a DMS-100, DMS-250, or DEX600E, it expects Nortel protocol. Whenever the switch is reset, this protocol specifies that the first Layer-3 "D" channel message must be a global RESTART message(bringing the "B" channels up all together) sent from the network switch to the Legend. If the switch is a 4ESS or 5ESS, it expects AT&T/Lucent protocol. Whenever the switch is reset, the first Layer-3 "D" channel message sent from the network switch to the Legend must be a "B" channel SERVICE message(bringing the "B"channels up one-at-a time).
This is a newly provisioned service. They are unable to call in or out.
Print PRI information. If the customer confirms that the PRI service is relatively generic and is utilizing Direct Inward Dialing, some things to take a quick look at are:
1. Is the switch type entered and correct?
2. Is the number of "B"channels entered the same as the number of lines?
3. Is there a number entered in the TestTelNum field?(If so delete it)
4. Are they using Direct Inward Dialing? If so make sure Incoming Routing is set to "By Dial Plan".
5. Look at entry "0" in the Call-By-Call Service Table. Are the patterns 0-9 entered?
6. Is the NtwkSer under Entry Number "0", for the Call-By-Call Service Table, set to "No Service"?
7. Is the NtwkSer under Entry Number "0", for the Dial Plan Routing Table, set to "Any Service"?

If your Central Office Switch is a GTD 5, then the default protocol is NI2, which wont work with Avaya Legend/Magix.
They must change the GTD to "CUSTOM"
The Magix or Legend is then set to ESS5, and all will be well ...
