2.6 handheld code is for the 95X and 85X or non java devices (C++ devices running on Cingular and Motient networks).
3.6 handheld code is for java devices (such as 5810, 6710, 6750...)except for Tri-Band series.
The 72XX and 6230 are running 3.7 handheld code and are tri-band devices.

The latest iterations of Blackberry handheld code is obtained by the carrier that you buy your device from.

Then there is the desktop manager software. As of 3.6 it is now a seperate install from the handheld code.
