In order to connect Win98/Win95 workstations to a Linux Server, we may have to enable Plain Text Password in Windows Operating System. The method to set this in Windows 95/98 OS is given below:
In Win95/98/Me units
1. Run Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). To do this
Click on Start | Run | Open: [regedit]
2. Click on the + sign to open the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following key:
\system\currentcontrolset\Services\VxD\VNETSUP
3. From the Edit menu, select new DWORD value.
4. Change the name of the new key from "New Value #1" to "EnablePlainTextPassword".
5. Modify the entry just added (go to the Edit menu and select Modify), to have the following value:
Value data: 1
6. Click OK and then quit the Registry Editor.
7. Shut down and restart Windows 95/98/Me computer
You should now be able to connect to a SAMBA computer, if the samba configuration contains PlainTextPassword. Note that some versions of the SAMBA has this as default. Some versions have the Password Encryption as the default.
