Verify power save options in control panel disabled?
Iomega zip drives sometimes conflict with onstream drives, if you have one, disconnect it.
If running through a USB hub, try directly to PC.
Disable anti-virus, screen savers, and any other apps running in the background.
Verify no other backup applications installed at the same time. If not using ntbackup, stop removable storage service so it doesn't try to access the drive.
Verify getting enough airflow?
If resting on top of a tower, try seperating from pc case. Try a different tape.
Retention tape, run scan disk to make sure data on the hdd is not corrupted.
Try another sw package.
Try slowing data transfer rate, disabling sync. negotation in SCSI BIOS.
Verify drive termination.
Make sure if using Veritas that the Block size is set to 32KB.
[Start Veritas backup exec > Go to the tab "Device" > Select the OnStream device > Right mouse click "properties" > Select the second tab "Configuration" > Change the "Blocksize per deveice" to 32K.]
