How is the Tape Engine Debug log Enabled?

by  davidmichel  Posted    (Edited  )
When troubleshooting Tape Engine problems it can be helpful to enable the debug log.

It's default location is C:\Program Files\Computer Associates\BrightStor ARCserve\log\tape.log.

Open ARCserve Server Admin found in the ARCserve Program Group
Select Admin/Configuration
Select the Tape Engine Tab
Set Message Level to Detail output to File Only

In the current versions the Write and Read commands are disabled by default so a new option has been added
Debug with Read/Writes

With this option set the log will grow very large very fast.

This will set the log to a debug level of 2. To increase the debug level to 3 or 4 it is necessary to make a registry change.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/CA or ComputerAssociates/BrightStor Enterprise or ARCserve Backup/Base/TapeEngine/Debug
Select LEVEL and double click to change.

It is not necessary to stop the Tape Engine to enable or disable the Tape Engine. However for many problems it is often helpful to start the Tape Engine with the log enabled to see the initilization process of the Tape Engine.
