Procedure for Remote Disaster Recovery of Windows 2000 Servers.
1. Install AS2K Advanced Edition ( SP3 CD ) on the Windows 2000 ( SP2 ) server designated as the backup server, call it ServerA.
2. Install Disaster Recovery Option from the AS2K ( SP3 CD ) on ServerA.
3. License installed products using RegisterIT.
4. On the remote Windows 2000 ( SP2 ) Server, call it ServerB, install Client Agent for Windows NT / 2000 and Open File Agent from AS2K ( SP3 CD )
5. License installed products using RegisterIT.
6. Make sure that name resolution is properly setup through either HOSTS / LMHOSTS files or using DNS.
7. Make sure that both servers have required entries in the hosts file.
8. The build of the AS2K Manager After SP3 should be 1086 & NT/2K Agent after SP3 should be 1046.
9. Verify name resolution by doing a æping ServerBÆ from ServerA.
10. On AS2K Manager on ServerA, goto :
Backup Manager -> Source Window -> Client Agents -> Windows NT /2000 Clients.
11. Right Click and select æAdd ObjectÆ
12. Add ServerB by name, do not enter the IP address and enable æUse Computer Name ResolutionÆ.
13. Double click the server to enter username / password, make sure that u see all drives, registry and system state.
14. Now take a full system backup of ServerB by selecting the complete machine as shown in the figure.
15. In the Destination tab, select the tape drive u want to use.
16. In the schedule tab, select æRun NowÆ and start the backup.
17. After the backup is complete, you can try viewing the session information each for the drives, registry & the DR info using the restore by session option.
18. Format 6 new high density floppies with the command æformat a: /uÆ.
19. Create 4 Windows 2000 boot diskettes using the makebt32 command found on the Windows 2000 media.
20. The disks should be labeled as :
a. Disk 1 : Windows 2000 Setup Boot Disk
b. Disk 2 : Windows 2000 Setup Disk 2
c. Disk 3 : Windows 2000 Setup Disk 3
d. Disk 4 : Windows 2000 Setup Disk 4
e. Disk 5 : Arcserve Machine Specific Recovery Disk
f. Disk 6 : DR Patch Disk
21. Now run the AS2K option for æCreate Book KitÆ and select the first option to create a new set of DR diskettes specific to ServerB.
22. Select ServerB in the list of servers displayed ( this list will only display servers for which a full backup has bee taken ).
23. Follow the procedure for creating the DR boot kit where the Windows 2000 Setup Boot Disk and Windows 2000 Setup Disk 4 will be modified.
24. This process will also create Disk 5 and Disk 6 as mentioned in Step 20.
Creation of boot kit is over. Now we move onto recovery of the crashed remote server ( ServerB ).
1. Reboot ServerB using the Windows 2000 Setup Boot Disk, this will start the Windows 2000 setup initialization program. Select the proper location and partition as needed.
2. Follow instructions on the screen and insert required floppies. Also insert Windows 2000 media and Arcserve 2000 ( SP3 CD ) when asked for.
3. The process will involve a number of reboots for the NIC drivers or for conversion of FAT partitions to NTFS.
4. The DR Wizard will then show the detected NIC, select æNOÆ to the presented question if that is the only NIC in the server.
5. Once this is through, the next reboot will show the tape drive details present on ServerA. Click next.
6. The next screen will show the partition table of ServerB. Do not click æAssign SessionÆ. Session Information details are shown on the specific partition. Just click Next. The Remote Disaster Recover will now commence.
7. Once this is through, then the DR Wizard will ask for rebooting the server.
8. This reboot will end the disaster recovery process, thus recovering the crashed server.
