What configurations need to be done to the Linksys BEFSRx1 Router to allow PPTP VPNs

Aside from configuring your router for your local network, your router needs a key port forwarded to allow PPTP VPN access. This assumes you have set up the VPN as stated in my "How do I set up a VPN with Win2K using Routing and Remote Services?" FAQ.

- Log into the Router via your web browser. (http://192.168.1.1 by default)

- By default, there is no username and the password is "admin"

- click on the Advanced tab, then the Forwarding tab

- enter port 1723 and select TCP (vs. UDP or BOTH) (PPTP uses this port number, if it is not forwarded, the PPTP packets are dropped)

- Click Apply and your are done.
