Cure-all for dialup issues unless ISP Hardware related.

Here are some steps to configure dialup networking and to keep you from getting disconnected and to hopefully get you conntected more quickly and at a faster rate.

1. Open My Computer

2. Open dialup-networking.

3. Delete all dailers that you do not use.

4. Make sure the dialer you are using is not labeled "my connection" and if it is, rename it.

5. Right click on the dialer and go to properties.

6. Uncheck "use area code and dialing properties". Depending on your ISP you may need to add a special set of numbers in the phone number field described in the next step that normally would be in the dialing properties section.

7. Make sure in the phone number you are dailing you disable call waiting if you have it. The code to disable call waiting should be provided by your phone company. Make sure there are no dashes in the phone number. Add 2 commas to the end of the phone number.

8. At the bottom click "Configure".

9. click connection up at the top and then advanced in the lower right. at the bottom of that screen you should see "extra settings". In that box type in "at&fs10=255s25=255" without the quotes. The at&f part resets your modem and will cause your modem speaker to turn on and will also probably show you an incorrect connection speed but will only help the actual connection speed. Just omit the at&f if not being able to see the true connection speed or hearing the modem speaker are bothersome. I suggest you leave at&f in there for at least 1 connection attempt since at&f resets the modem. The other part is what is called an s-register and it allows your modem to withstand noise on the phone line. If it tells you that your modem is not responding after doing this tutorial it is because it does not like the code that we just put in in this step and you can just go back there and take it out. Then you will need to restart your computer.

10. Click OK.

11. On the next screen you can click port settings and lower your port speeds if you are still getting disconnected after you try all these other steps but it is unlikely that you will need to do this.

12. Click OK on this next screen.

13. Click server types up at the top of the screen. The only two boxes you want checked on this screen are "enable software compression" and "tcp/ip".

14. Click TCP/IP Settings on the right side of that window. Make sure "server assigned name server addresses" and "sever assigned IP address" both have dots in them. click OK on that screen and you should be back in Dialup Networking.

15. That should be it and you should now have alot more stable and hopefully faster connection.


Note: You can try different "init" strings specifically for your modem to try and attain faster speeds. These init strings are placed in the extra settings window where in this FAQ we placed at&fs10=255s25=255. These init strings can be found at www.modemhelp.org or www.modemhelp.net .
