What can I do about lost meta-tags when applying a template to an existing document?

From Macromedia technotes:

Meta tags are lost when applying templates:

Workaround for re-adding meta tags to template'd pages:

http://www.macromedia.com/support/dreamweaver/ts/documents/template_metatags.htm

The metatags can be re-added by manually editing the code to include the meta tags in the standard "doctitle" editable region.

Any meta-tags you have in the template will over-ride those that were already present in the document, sadly.

The only real workaround is to use templates from the start, even if the template is a minimal framework with the necessary tags in the head.
