HTML templates invalid after saving in Dreamweaver

by  raymondbirch  Posted    (Edited  )
Problem:
A Flash HTML publishing template that has been opened and saved in Dreamweaver may produce the following error message when using Flash's Publish feature:

"An invalid template file (template_name.html) has been found in your HTML folder."

Reason:
The HTML templates in Flash's HTML folder are strictly templates; they are not true HTML files. By default, when Dreamweaver open these files it rewrites the HTML, inserting tags to make the HTML code "correct". Additional HTML and BODY tags are inserted at the top of the document, which makes the template invalid in Flash.

Solution:
Prevent Dreamweaver from adding these tags, by instructing it NOT to rewrite HTML files.

In Dreamweaver:
1 Choose Edit > Preferences, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+U (Windows) or Cmd+U (Macintosh) to open the Preferences control panel.

2 Select HTML Rewriting from the column on the left.

3 In the form field box beside "Never Rewrite HTML:
In files with Extensions", insert the ".html" extension at the end of the list.

Note: The list items are separated by spaces. Do not add commas between list items.

This will cause Dreamweaver to save the file as-is, without adding additional HTML tags to the Flash publishing templates.
