ò Gradual Filters
FILTER EFFECTS
Hi,
Have you ever wanted to apply a filter to an image, but instead of having a straight filter applied to the whole image have the filter fade into the image or fade away off the edge.
This is how you get that effect:
- You will need knowledge of layer masks and loading selections via the shortcut to do this.
Read up on layer masks here if you don't know anything about them or if you are unsure: faq229-1962
* NOTE *
I would suggest you make sure you make/keep a backup of your image b/c once you apply the filter you can't undo it after you close the image (Not until photoshop 8 that is, when they introduce non-destructive filter layers
)
Open the image you wish you apply your faded filter to and unlock the layer if need be. Next add a layer mask to the image. Then take the gradient tool and make a gradient on the image with the right hand thumbnail selected on the layer so that you are applying the gradient to the mask and not the image. Next press Ctrl/Command and click on the right hand thumbnail (that is the shortcut for loading the selection). If you get a dialog box saying that less than 50% of pixels are selected just hit "ok" to that. Now if you get that dialog then you won't see a marquee, but that doesn't mean it's not there. Next right click on that right hand thumbnail and disable the layer mask. Click on the left thumbanil and then go to FILTER > and apply any filter you want. De-select the marquee and right click on the right thumbnail and discard the mask. Now you have an image with a faded filter on it.
To get even more fancy, instead of creating a gradient on the mask, select the right hand thumbnail and goto FILTER > RENDER > CLOUDS and then load the selection and apply a filter, now you will have a filter applied that resembles the clouds and is gradated is various spots. You can also experiment by creating your own fades using quick masks or channels.
