The difference between Windows Media and Real Networks

by  ckennerdale  Posted    (Edited  )
Windows Media is fast gaining market share from the Real Networks format.

Historically, the Microsoft format (Netshow) didnt cut the mustard against the market leader. But is rapidy evening out.

The best way to compare the two formats is the view some files. We have posted a page-

just for that reason.

The main differences are in file size and not quality now. On average WM files can be 60% of the size of Real Networks equivalents, and thus streaming costs will be cut, especially as their is no license to buy if you are streaming your files off a streaming server.

Remember though that WM does have problems with Macs making it impossible to embed the player in a page. Conversely Real Networks and IE5 for the Mac can also pose problems for the developer.
