Where can I read about....

All the Sybase docs are on line. You can view & search them in HTML form and/or download the PDF versions for local use. The HTML versions have a reasonably good search engine that goes with them. The PDF versions do have textual indexes at the end (that unfortunately contain links that don't work)--but you can find the pages you need "manually". The PDF versions do not include Arobat searchable indexes (too bad).

As a general rule, Sybase docs are unusually good (naturally, they have some flaws--what manuals don't?), but they are always a good place to start and they're better than you might expect if you've used other vendor's DB products.

Adaptive Server Enterprise (Sybase SQL Server) documents are at:

http://sybooks.sybase.com/as.html

Manuals for the whole product set are at:

http://www.sybase.com/support/manuals

Some commands (such as BCP) which you might expect to be documented in the Reference Guide or the System Administration Guide are actually in the Utility Programs documentation (which is not listed in the "core" documentation set for a given release; it's [unexpectedly] with the installation and configuration documents). To find the utility docs, navigate to the "Installation & Configuration" docs and then scroll down to find the document. For instance, the 12.0 version of the document you need to read about BCP and other OS utility programs is at the end of the list on this link:

http://sybooks.sybase.com/asp1200e.html

On some earlier versions of the documentation, you'd have to find your specific platform. For 12.0 and above, the utility documentation has been consolidated so that there's one manual for Unix & one for Windows. Here's the direct links for 12.0:

Windows Utilities
