Serial ports are getting rare on laptops these days, so the old trick of hooking up a null-modem cable to the CallPilot's serial port, starting a terminal emulator, power-cycling the CallPilot and watching the serial output is getting chancy.
Fortunately there's another way. Connect your laptop to the CallPilot with a crossover Ethernet cable. Start up a sniffing program, e.g. WireShark. Watch the output. Only two devices are talking on this crossover cable -- one is your laptop, the other is the CallPilot. If you get tired of waiting for the CP to put out some packets, power-cycle it and watch for ARP requests; they'll come along a couple of minutes later (in the form of "MAC address 123456:ABCDEF wants to know who has 192.168.1.1, tell 192.168.1.110"; the second IP address is the CallPilot's).
