How To Configure Embedded UM for Exchange 2010 Using IMAP Impersonation

by  SNJQuintin  Posted    (Edited  )
So great, newer versions of MCD have embedded UM built in, BUT, at first glance, it looks like you need the IMAP username and password for each end user - not secure, or practical. But fear not! There is a way. Please note, this was done using version 7.2 of MCD, and Exchange 2010 version 14.03.0266.001. This may work with other versions of Exchange, but I have not tried or tested those. This assumes that you already have IMAP setup and working on your Exchange server, as that is out of the scope of this FAQ.

I would like to walk you through configuring from start to finish, in case someone finds this who does NOT have embedded UM configured yet.

Step 1: Configure the Global Settings for Embedded UM
1.) Log into the System Administration Tool
2.) Click on VOICEMAIL, and then SYSTEM SETTINGS, and then Embedded UM Settings
3.) Click on CHANGE, click on YES, then fill in your server address, and connection type, and ports (for Exchange 2010, use STARTTLS as the connection type, and leave the ports as defaults).
4.) Click on SAVE

Step 2: Configure Exchange 2010 for IMAP Impersonation
1.) Launch Exchange Management Shell (EMS)
2.) Run this from EMS: Get-MailboxDatabase | Add-ADPermission -user [username] -AccessRights GenericAll
([username] could also be the name of a group - and then you can add/remove users from the group as necessary)

Step 3: Configure Mitel Voicemail User Settings
1.) Log into the System Administration Tool
2.) Click on Users and Devices, then User and Services Confiuration
3.) Find the end user whom you want to enable Embedded UM for, and click on their name, then Extension #, then Voicemail.
4.) Towards the bottom, you will find the Embedded UM settings.
5.) Click on YES to enable
6.) For IMAP Account Login, type your admin username that you used during step 2 (or one of the users in your group that you gave full exchange access to), followed by a backslash, and then the username for the mailbox you are working on. For example: admin-imap@domain.local\joeblow@domain.local (where domain.local is the domain name of your Active Directory)
7.) Enter the password for your admin user from step 2, and confirm it.
8.) That's it, save your changes, and test it.
