The following is a link I came across a while back, kindly posted by Steve Van Els (aka svanels), which is very helpful in suggesting coding standards by which code readability and consistency could be enhanced.

As programmers, we all find that we have to maintain code written by other programmers and often it is made much more difficult by the lack of coding standards. So let's start thinking about those poor people who have to read our code and maintain it!
