Exchange 2K over Web With Outlook 2003

I have finally found the answer to how to use Exchange server 2000 over the web for our remote users, and without exposing port 135. You only need 3 ports open, and they can be ports that are already open or any ports that you would like to assign. I am sure that many of you also have the same need. Yes this can be handled by having your users VPN into your network, but this isn't always the most efficient way of doing things, plus my VPN folks can see more of the network than I would actually like.

Simply follow the instructions with KB 270836 to statically map the ports of your Exchange server. Once you have successfully configured your exchange server, you will also need to open the ports that you have assigned to Exchange on your firewall (You do not need to have port 135 open on your firewall, the next step will take care of this). This takes care of the Exchange portion of your fix.

Outlook 2003 also needs to be statically mapped. (Unfortunately earlier versions supposedly do not support this, but my needs were only Outlook 2003 so I did not investigate this). To accomplish this follow the directions at KB 833799.

Make sure that the static ports for the Exchange are the same ports you are statically mapping to from Outlook. I hope this helps everyone, I know it sure helped us in a big way!!!
