XP Start Menu 1

Run" and "Search" are missing from the Start Menu (Windows XP Professional running on a new Dell 8400). How can I put them on?

There may very well be a better way but one way would be re-install xp over existing xp if you have a win xp install disc rather than a "restore" disc. A restore disk will wipe out all added progs whereas the other wont.

Right click on the start button, properties, start menu tab, customize, advanced, in the list put a check mark in the Run command and Search boxes.

Included are the registry entries to remove these menu options. This is to both disable and enable the run and search settings.


Open your registry and find or create the key below.
Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called "NoRun" and set it according to the value data below.
Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.
Note: If the user still has access to the MS-DOS prompt icon or command prompt, the user may start unauthorized applications.

The properties of the Start Menu has an Advanced Start Menu Options where you can check or uncheck various options.

These options can also be configured via Group Policy or the Registry directly.
