XLink or something to replace it in .NET

I am an XML begginer!
Book I am reading about XML (from 2001) explains XLink technology, but I can not make it work in Visual studio .NET!
Does Microsoft support it?
Is there some other way to link XML (or other files) on XML document?
Any suggestion is welcome (even a title of a good book!)
