Is it possible to write a Word macro that causes a URL to be accessed each time the document is opened? I want to use this to monitor the number of times documents I create are viewed. Given that the user can refuse access to the macro would I be able to prevent printing of the document via the macro if access to the URL is blocked?

Yes. I believe so.

Given that the user can refuse access to the macro would I be able to prevent printing of the document via the macro if access to the URL is blocked?
I would think so, just not sure whether it can be done without a lot of work...

Nonetheless, you'd be better off seeking assistance with this as you plow through it, over in forum707.

The first part? Absolutely yes.
The second part? What on earth is the connection between these? You want to count the number of times the documents is opened? There are easier ways than causing a URL to be accessed. You could increment a variable in the document. You could write to a wee text file. Perhaps there is a reason for you wanting to do it that way, but it certainly is not needed.

kjv is correct though, this sounds like you should post to the VBA forum.

The connection is this - when I say I want to monitor how often the doc is opened, the doc will be available for download from my website. Once it is gone I have no means of accessing wee text files on the userss computers. The URL would be used to jog a database entry on my server.

You could write to a wee text file.
