Hopefully somebody can help me with this. I have multiple WIN98 machines networked together running Office 97. A user opens and modifies a word document, then saves and closes it. Sometimes when the user then attempts to reopen the document at a later time, it shows the document already open by then and thus available as read-only. Why is that document not closing properly, and how do I go about closing it after the fact withough losing changes??

Thanks.

What I've discovered is that, for some reason, Word and Excel don't exit properly. If you Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get the task list, you will often see that MSWord or Excel is still running. End task on it, and that should release the lock on the file.

Thanks David...I'll give that a try... I need to check with the users if these document files are stored locally or on the NT server. Maybe I don't have the latest service patches for office either.
