Wireless Hotel

Thursday night I stayed at a Hotel with wireless access. Upon arrival I noticed that as soon as I got my laptop up it joined the network. I had my NIC setup with a class c of 192.168.5.3. I then set it for auto and it joined as well. No matter what scheme I setup, I was still allowed to get internet from this wireless setup. How in the world did they manage this?

And what is the best way to setup a Hotel with Wireless and provide a firewall and easy access for everyone?
