Hi,

I seem to get the "Winfix2005" popup everytime I use IE. I'm pretty sure it's spyware or somethiing of that sorts. Note that it doesn't popup when I use Mozilla.

I have traced it to a Registry key entry in HKEY_USERS\Microsoft\SearchAssistant which points to my C:\windows\srchasst folder in my C drive.

Can I just get get rid of the whole "SearchAssistant" entry in the Registry to solve my problem?

Please let me know.

Thanks,
JJ

lol Search assistant is usually not that easy to remove. Its cool web searchs evil brother. Ill give you a few links for helping. First off download the programs below and run them.

Adaware

Spybot

Aboutbuster

CWS shredder

If it still remains after running these download hijackthis from the link below. Extract to desktop or prefered folder. Open it up and choose do a system scan and save a logfile and post your results on here. Keep in mind search assistant isnt usually easy to remove lol.

Hijackthis

Hi,

A question, this seems to be only with IE. It doesn't seem to popup with Mozilla. Is it only related with IE?

Please let me know.

Thanks,
JJ

Yes search assistant and most spyware only affects ie because of active x controls. Seldomly does anything effect firefox. Ive seen a couple disable firefox to where your forced to use ie but other than that usually does not affect it.

Hi,

Oh well, so I guess the solution is to keep using FireFox & screw IE. :)

Please let me know if that'll solve my problem.

Thanks,
JJ

Well it wont remove the other spyware which i suggest you remove but it can help prevent you from getting future spyware and viruses. If you do use it disable java untill you need it on firefox.

Hi,

I think I found a solution to all of the winfix problems. It's straight from the Microsoft site. Please let me know your opinion. Anybody's opinion will help to let me know if this is a legitimate fix.

I'm quoting straight from the Microsoft site here:

"

Problems noted previously in this thread have been fixed and the following utility will
work.

Download WinFixerFix.exe from the URL --

Execute; WinFixerFix.exe { Note: You must accept the default of C:\McAfee }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to enable WGET.EXE to download the needed McAfee related files.

Execute; c:\mcafee\clean.bat
{ or Double-click on 'Clean Link' in c:\mcafee }

A final report in HTML format called C:\mcafee\ScanReport.HTML will be generated. At the
end of the scan, it will be displayed in your browser (Opera, FireFox or Internet Explorer).
It is suggested that you move the report out of c:\mcafee before performing another scan.
It would be a good idea to scan in Safe Mode and in Normal Mode and save a copy of the HTML
report for each session.

"

Please tell me if this is legitimate and if this works??

I'm really hoping a found a solution to everybody's problem here as well. :)

Thanks,
JJ

Hi,

I think the link your referring ot is actually:

I'm pretty sure that'll work too. Can anybody confirm that? Please let us know.

Was the one I gave in the previous post helpful. I'm pretty sure that got rid of it as well.

Please let me know if it did. Also please let know if the link:

is the cure for that as well.

Thanks,
JJ

Did anyone find a solution for this as I also know of a PC which is infected with winfix

I have tried various solutions, Adaware doesn't work and neither does the new MS Anti-Spyware prog.

I see the Symantec class it as a Trojan and the removal method by most websites seems very unsure!!

Any ideas appreciated.

Neil
