Can anyone tell me if the system image backup built into windows 7 creates an image of the entire partition (slack space, temporary files, etc) or if creates just an image of the files or the "used portion" of the system partition? For example, if you do a system image backup of a severely fragmented drive, would the restored image be severely fragmented as well? I have heard two different opinions.

A system image is an exact copy of a drive."

What is a system image?

"When you restore your computer from a system image, it's a complete restoration. You can't choose individual items to restore, and all of your programs, system settings, and files are replaced with those on the system image. Before starting, make sure that the removable media that your backup is stored on is available, if applicable. Also, make sure that the disk that you're restoring the backup to is the same size or larger than the disk that you backed up."

What's hiding in your slack space and temp files - Inquiring minds would love to know.

CCleaner can wipe the MFT, temp files and wipe empty disk space. To wipe slack space, use something else like BCWipe, Kremlin Wipe and probably some (freebie) others.
