We've got a customer with some W2008 activation problems.
Some time ago another supplier sold them a W2008 server, and the supplier installed it with their own activation key, because the customer didn't have any Windows license left.
Now this server keeps telling that Windows is not original, and must be activated.
Now this customer has acquired from MS more MAK licenses (for 50 servers or so) and is trying to change the server's key and activate it.
When he tries to change the key and activate, he gets a message saying that activation was OK, but instead of getting the "this copy is not original" message in the down-right corner, it now tells "evaluation mode" and five minutes later it goes back and tells againg that this copy is not original.
Event viewer shows some messages about activation:

Another weird thing is that when he logs into the server, it shows a Windows Activation window with 2 options, but it doesn't allow to activate it, both buttons show Dismiss, instead of Activate and Remind me later.
I've read something about the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool, but the customer is scared to run it, because this server is critical to them and he is afraid this tool might lock the server.
Is there any risk in running this tool?
What could I do to troubleshoot this?
Is it safe to run the Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool?
