Win 2000 Pro cant get hooked up to internal network

I have an internal network that will not be hooked to the internet. I have link on my switch and have set an appropriate gateway, but cannot ping or communicate with my devices (CiscoWorks2000) Could someone give me a check list that I could use to reconfirm my settings.

Could be a simple hardware issue: crossover vs straight 10/100 cable. Check the NIC leds.
