hey there.
ok, there are 6 mac machines all os9 connected to one mac machine used as a server.
there is a windows pc, windows 98.
how do i host an access database on the windows machine so that the 6 mac machines can use it?
my idea is that virtualpc on all machines including the server, network them and then they should be able to see the database on the windows pc and use it right?
or is that just too simple?
or are there any other ways of doing this that i have missed?

Installing VPC on a bunch of Macs seems expensive. Why not bring the horse to the water? Do you need MS Access? Can you export the data to another database?

I share data using MySQL. Those WinPCs with MS Access can use the familiar Access form interface to view the data stored in MySQL. Other computers (Macs/*nix) access the data through a PHP web interface to the MySQL server. This saves licensing costs for VPC and Access. MySQL is free.

YeahBut,

Writing the PHP interface requires than just turning the computer on....

Depending on what kind of data access you need, you could get by with a GUI interface to MySQL to run simple queries without fancy reports. See versiontracker.com for 'cocoa' & 'mysql'.

the database they want to access is quite a complex sales and customer relationship management database.
and they arent that technical, they need a very friendly gui and we already discussed hosting it on their intranet, they said no.
i cant beliebe its so complicated to be able to do this!
dont macs have any software like this already?
gotta be a huge great big hole in the market!

it was just the technicality of it i wanted to check out.
so technically, nevermind the cost, is it possible to do what i have suggested?
put access on a mac server running VPC ,then network the other macs to it so they can use it?

Technically, yes - - it is possible. It is also technically possible to send a man to Mars. You may not be pleased with the cost and time to produce questionable results. VPC does not run swiftly on a Mac.

You may find less effort in writing a web-based front-end to the database.
