VMware Workstation communication failure

I am currently running VMware workstation 6 communication to the network through bridge via Gigabit router. I am exchanging MASSIVE volumes of data from the VM to a SATA hard disk. Occasionally communications fail (as evidenced by a message "could not find XYZ").

Is there a better, i.e., more efficient way to set up the communications, to avoid this kind of problem?

Are you moving files from the guest to the host?

or are you moving files from the guest to a network location?

I the VM read/write data from/to the host computer, e.g., no data is resident on the guest computer.
