vmm32.vxd - not UMAX causing problem

Please help!<br>I am trying to do a full install of WIN98 SE into a Compaq Presario 4540 -&nbsp;&nbsp;K6-266, 32MB RAM.&nbsp;&nbsp;My files get copied, I type in my registration key, hardware devices get installed, and then the computer restarts.&nbsp;&nbsp;The WIN98 splash screen is shown and then I get the following error:<br><br>Windows protection error.&nbsp;&nbsp;You need to restart your computer.<br>C:\Windows\system\vmm32.vxd: Missing/unable to load.<br><br>(If it did load, I think this is the stage where you have to set your time and little things like that before WIN98 fully runs.)<br><br>I have read various pages on the Internet. Some say it is a error due to UMAX scanners loading up a driver called umaxis11.386,<br>I checked the system.ini file and that did not exist in there.&nbsp;&nbsp;And from what&nbsp;&nbsp;I've read, the error occurs after this scanner is installed, but I haven't even loaded WIN98 once.&nbsp;&nbsp;I don't know what to do... please help.... thanks...

EraserK -<br><br>On restarts, have you tried going into Safe Mode?&nbsp;&nbsp;When you have restarted, ensure you have nothing plugged in except your mouse & keyboard.&nbsp;&nbsp;This alone may help your trouble shooting.<br><br>I'm not sure about the UMAX scanner issue, but there has been some documentation re: AMD - USB - Win98se working/not working together at some points.&nbsp;&nbsp;There is a patch file available that may fix your issue.&nbsp;&nbsp;You can grab the patch and read more from here:<br><br><A HREF="
