Using a Cable Modem with DHCP and SuSE7.2

Hi

OK this is for my home network, I want to have a SuSE7.2 server to act as my firewall, ssh server, so on, I have put two network cards into it, and configured eth0 to use DHCP, I have a cable modem and if I connect my Windows XP box to the modem (via cat5) I get a address via DHCP, but when I connect my Linux box I dont??
This is what getting me, I cant even ping the modem if I fix my IP on my Linux box (using the IP, Gateway, Subnet Mask given to my XP box), but I can ping the modem when I reconnect it to my XP box, I am really stumped to what is the problem here.
I am not a total beginner with this, so I have done all the standard checks, ie cables and so on, Linux TCP/IP is working OK as if I set a static ip (192.168.0.254) on the Linux box, and then connect my XP box to my hub (192.168.0.253) they can both talk to each other without any problem.
Sorry I am going on a bit, but I have found it hard to explain the problem, I am guessing that DHCP would respond to any request, ie it would not be able to see the difference between a Windows or a Linux box.
Anyway, any help would be great.

Is there a way you can confirm that you have your DHCP client working properly? maybe run a DHCP server on your xp box and try to connect to it as a client? have you tried taking out one of the ethernet cards and trying just to connect your linux box to the cable modem?

Just throwing out suggestions, I apologize if you've tried all this already.

Thanks Venkman

After a long search round the web I found the answer, NTL (the ISP) will only supply addresses to your MAC address at time of set up (else you need to re-run the setup, can't do that with Linux), so just swapped my XP box NIC with my Linux box and it works.

Thanks again

No not really, its really crap, and they will not fix your IP unless you pay for a business acount, and there support is poo, but other than that, they are great (not)

LedZep, I had a similar problem with NTL. You can reset the modem and get a new IP. I first did it when I installed SMI server (e-smith.org) and again when I installed SuSE 8.0.

With SuSE I had exactly the same prob as you and this sorted it out.

To reset your cable modem, if memory serves me right you will need to have it turned on and connected in the normal way, then you need to push a pin or something similar into the small hole just below the usb port, when you push the pin in you also need to turn the modem off from the front power switch at the same time and this should reset it and give you a new IP. This is all for the motorola surfboard. NTL don't support Linux and getting help from them has proven dificult. Tezdread
