User / group permissions

Hi and happy new year,
I realise this may be a simple request, but I have forgotten.
Can you let me know whether user permissions take preference over group permissions if the user is a member of the group. For example, if a group has read/write permissions to a resource(s)and a user (who is a member of the group)only requires read access what is the resultant user permission?

If i recall it is the lowest of the two permissions.
