Upgrade ad for server 2008

Hi

I have a client that has a couple of 2003 dc's and we are planning on putting in a server 2008 and want to make that a dc.

I know I have to run adprep beforehand but the question is do both of the 2003 dc's have to be sp2 and above?. I have an isuue with one server that does not have enough available disk space to upgrade to sp2.
