I have a LTO tape drive attached to a SunBlad1000 that I want to ufsdump to for backups. The tape host cannot rsh to the other servers for security reasons but the other systems canget to the tape host. The tape host is not visible to the outside world. I have 8 servers thatcan successfully talk to the tape drive on the tape host. One server can't. I just don'tunderstand. My .rhosts and hosts.equiv files are set up correctly and I can rsh to the tape hostfrom the server in question with no problems. I get the error:

ufsdump 0uf tape-host:/dev/rmt/1n /needsBackup
DUMP: sehll/tcp: unknown service

I'm running Solaris 8 on all the servers.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

Check in /etc/services that shell has not been typed as sehll.

haha... I must have misstyped that. I ment to say shell/tcp.

But after furter investigation I found that some one had renamed the services file to services.save. I'm guessing with the intention to make a new but never got arround to it. That might explain my problem. Do you know If I have to restart inetd to make it take effect? I don't think I am alowed to do that on this server, and a re-boot is out of the question.

Thanks,

bjensen

ps -fe|egrep inetd

get the pid

kill -s hup pid

this will force a reread of it's config file.
