Type on a Path

Is there anyone out there who can tell me exactly how I can type on a path and still maintain the path line as a visible object instead of having it disappear? I am trying to create map artwork and having a route name with no route to see is kind of useless...

Depending on what version your using it should keep the stroke. Or you can duplicate the line prior to typing (having pasted it behind the line you wish to type on).
