Can someone tell me if general users on an AIX box should have access to run the 'topas' command for monitoring the system . Our admin says that he should be the only one to run this command and I insist that users should be able to run this to monitor what is going on with our software.....Who is right?

This would be a question best answered by your IT Policy. Don't have one, eh? Join the crowd. This is not a technical issue but a ego issue. As an admin I wish that I had a user who could understand the output of top!

I think that no-one on the list can answer the question, it is an internal decision. If you are the admin's boss, you win, if not, go to lunch with their boss and see how they feel.

What does topas show that an admin wouldn't want me running the command? I need to have my bases covered before I speak to the "boss".

Topas runs system performance tools....which can make a hit on your overall system performance....It could be a pig (my opinion) resource wise. If you have 20 people running it... One or two...and start it and exit out.....no problem..but someone would need to monitor how many at one time are running it etc.......and whether they walk away and leave it running................

but I agree...it is a power /IT issue

Here are samples of topas and what it shows
