When trying to connect an HP LaserJet 1020 to Windows XP pro I get the following message. Cannot install this Hardware There was a problem installing this hardware: HP LaserJet 1020 An error occurred during the installation of the device. The specified port is unknown.

the device shows up in the device manager and states that it is working fine, however, it does not show in the printers and faxes folder. I have removed all of the usb ports and devices and rebooted, all came back, the printer still had the same error.

The issue is related to the print-spooler being unable to assign a port to the specified printer.
This could be caused by bad USB-chipset drivers, loss of connectivity (bad cable) or a corrupted print-spooler.
Do you have or had any Lexmark printers installed by any chance ?
Are you using the CDROM installer or did you download a driver ?
Also when during the installation do you get this error ?

I'm having this same issue with Win XP, and a HP DJ F335.
I've cleared the print spooler and uninstalled/reinstalled via CD and still having issues.
Has anyone discovered a solution yet? I'm searching the am starting to lose my eye-sight. [dazed] [ponder]
