I'm helping my daughter.

She has a newer Toshiba Laptop, MX-331 I think.

It has XP Home as the OS.

She was trying to unload and reload various anti virus apps and the boot process got corrupted and would attempt to start in safe mode and then reboot...continuous

After finding how to boot off a CD (hold down the C key) we were able to boot off a cd, and enter the recovery console. I had her run fixmbr and the unit boots but she now is given a temporary profile saying the original profile was corrupted or does not have security rights.

With XP Home there is no security tab in properties so there is no way of reassigning rights?

If the original profile was the administrator (which we had renamed) then there is no way to log in as administrator and create users or set rights?

All files and folder structure remains, we went into msconfig/startup and turned off all old removed antivirus and stopped and disabled all old antivirus services.

But we need to create a working admin account, any ideas?

thanks

John

1. What is she logging in as? Wasn't her user ever an Administrator user - because the fact of a temp profile doesn't change the account type.

2. To access security settings in Home, log on in Safe mode - as an administrative level user. The Administrator user is available to log on with in Safe Mode (press F8 key as XP starts to boot - white line across bottom - to access safe mode).

Error Message: "Windows Cannot Load the Locally Stored Profile"

"Windows cannot load your profile because it may be corrupted" error message when you try to log on to Windows XP

But the problem is that even though she was the administrator and that is how she logged in, the OS gives a prompt that "Windows can not load the locally stored profile. Possible cause of this error includes insufficient rights." It then follows with, "It can not find your profile, it is logging you on with a temporary profile and that any changes made will not take (or be kept when logging out)."

It seems the profile for the administrator is corrupted some how.

Only 2 profiles listed are administrator and guest.

All the microsoft knowledge base articles say log on as an administrator, but if that is the only account and it is corrupted then what?

Are you able to logon via Safe Mode as the Administrator?

With a second Administrative user in Home the ADMINISTRATOR is the built-in account it can only be accessed from Safe Mode, will only work from Safe Mode and will not be able to login or access anything in Normal Mode because of built-in account restrictions which confine the Administrator (Home only) to Safe Mode logon and use.

The ADMINISTRATOR account can never be deleted, disabled, or removed from the Administrators local group, ensuring that you never lock yourself out of the computer by deleting or disabling all the administrative accounts. This feature sets the ADMINISTRATOR account apart from other members of the Administrators local group.
