I would start with Alarms & Events under the System Administration section of the "Fat Client". If you are using the Web Client I am sure there is a similar function.
This will get you familiar with what is happening regularly and non-regularly on your server. If you are new to the environment I wouldn't suggest playing around with starting and stopping services on your server.
There are some details in the Alarms and Events that will explain what you should and shouldn't do to troubleshoot the issues. It also tells you when to contact the Vendor for support, usually the last line item of every issue.
