SV8300 IPLC Config

All, I am an old IVS guy and working on an SV8300 to enable a couple IP Phones. NTAC told me something that I could not correlate in documentation so I want to try to see if anyone knows for sure if it is correct or just a 'recommendation'.

I was told that if I already have my maintenance port assigned with a default GW then I must remove it and add a default GW to the VOIPDB port.

My intended/preferred design is to leave the default GW on the maintenance port and the couple IP phones I add will be on the same subnet as the VOIP port so shouldn't require a default GW.

Is it correct that my IP Phone won't work unless I assign a default GW to VOIP port? I mean, there is not an actual default GW on the voice network anyway so if I put something there it will just be made up anyhow. If it really does need to be there 'just because' then fine, but in that case do I really need to remove the default GW from the maintenance port? They are two different networks that do not overlap:

Maint: 10.23.96.0/16
VOIP: 10.24.96.0/24

Once you add the VOIPDB all of the maintenance functions can be done through the VOIPDB port. Set up the VOIPDB port to accommodate your IP phones and don't bother connecting to the maintenance port anymore. Set your MAT up to connect to the VOIPDB port.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I will consider doing that, but was hoping to avoid a trip to a site that is pretty far for me and I would have to go out there, make changes, reset system and move cables around after doing this..

Do you know the answer to my main concern? Does it really matter if I have a default GW assigned to both ports? or if I leave the default GW off the VOIP port should my IP Phone still work?

This doc I found shows setting default GW on both ports and I just wonder why NTAC seemed to think I can not?

I cannot tell you exactly why NTAC wants it that way. I am sure they have run across an issue in the past and err on the side of caution. In my experience with NTAC, if you speak to a different engineer you would probably get a different answer.

The issue is, the Maintenance Port IP address cannot be in the same Networt as the VoIP Ports. this has been a manufacture limitation since the begining. They must be in separate Networks. The deafaut IP Address for the Maint Port is 192.168.1.1 with a mask of 255.255.255.0 and no default gateway assigned.

So, if you have a routable network address assignedt to the maint port now and want to add IP phones, first make sure you have a 64 or 128 PAD card mounted onto the CPU, delete the maint port IP address and set is back to default IP Addresses noted below, put that networked / routable IP address, mask and yes, add the gateway address, EC6 your SV8300, then reset the CPU and plug the cable from the maint port (Ethernet port) to the VoIP port.

If there were to be a problem, set your laptop to a static IP address of 192.168.1.2 so that you would be able to locally connect to the maint (Ethernet) port which is now 192.168.1.1 if you needed to.

Example:

Maint Port / Ethernet:
0B001-00-192.168.1.1
0B001-01-255.255.255.0

VoIP Port:
0B101-00-172.19.94.10
0B101-01-255.255.255.0
0B101-02-172.19.94.1

VoIP Port (PAD Card)
0B201-00-192.19.94.11

Thank you also for the reply. I think I am just going to try it and see if it works. If the site wasn't 90 minutes drive each way this would be easier. I was hoping to get something definitive, because in case it doesn't work I can't reset the system until after hours. I have remote access to it this weekend and can reboot if I want to change something first.

I understand networking quite well and the maint and voip interface are two different networks so I know that is fine and there is no conflict there. I just don't really believe whomever at NTAC told be that a voip phone won't work unless I have a default gateway assigned in 0B101:02. There is no default gateway on that network so anything I put there would be a made up address anyhow. There will literally be one IP phone connected to the voip port on a separate network with nothing else (imagine a phone with a power supply connected directly to the voip port). Per my network described above, I'll make the phone 10.24.96.100/24 and I will put SIP server IP 10.24.96.1, port 5080. The 10.23.0.0/16 network and maint port config I plan to leave as is with default GW although technically neither port needs a default GW from a networking perspective because no devices outside the network need to access it..

I'll give it a try Monday and report back.

Keep in mind that when you set up the IP phone in the phone it will ask for a gateway address. I don't think you can leave it blank.

Also, on my test SV9300 system, I removed the gateway address from 0B101-02 and I was able to make station to station calls as well as copper trunk call in and out.

So just to bring this to a close. It all worked as it should have. These are my actual settings:

0B001>00:10.23.96.1-
0B001>01:255.255.0.0-
0B001>02:10.23.254.254-

0B101>00:10.24.96.1-
0B101>01:255.255.255.0-
0B101>02:NONE-

0B201>00:10.24.96.2-

I assigned an IP phone 10.24.96.100/24 with no gateway and it works fine.

My main problem was not knowing early on that the 8300 firmware was too old to support the IPLC that was installed. When I first configured 0B101 and 0B201 and reset I couldn't even get a link light from the VOIP port which led me to think the board might be bad.
