Start second instance of Excel 2007 5

I'm wondering if there is a quick/easy way to automatically open a spreadsheet in a second instance of Excel so it can be displayed on a 2nd monitor. I know you can just start up Excel and open the 2nd spreadsheet that way, but my user wants something quicker/easier than that.

I googled around for this and found something that said to check the file type reference and uncheck the "Browse in same window" under the advanced button. This is already unchecked...

Thanks for any other ideas.

 
Hold down the sift key when opening the second instance. It will ask if you want to open in Safe Mode. Just say no.

I tried that, but the issue isn't opening a second instance of Excel, that you do by just clicking the Excel icon again. If you're referring to shift/click on the spreadsheet (or shortcut to the spreadsheet) that does nothing, nor does ctrl/click or alt/click.

 
So what you want is a way to force Excel to open a new instance from a shortcut?

Potentially, but you know users...

In this particular case, she opens one file (not shortcut) from a network drive, then wants to open another file (not shortcut) in a 2nd instance of Excel.

 
If Excel 2007 try clicking on the Office button and selecting Excel Options. Select the Advanced section and under "Display" check the box that says "Show all windows in the task bar". OK your way out and then use the Office button ->Exit Excel to close Excel the 1st time after the change is made. This allows for the 2nd instance to be dragged to the 2nd monitor.

If Excel 2003 then go Tools ->Options and on the "View" tab check the box next to "Windows in task bar". OK your way out and then use File ->Exit to close Excel the 1st time after the change is made. This allows for the 2nd instance to be dragged to the 2nd monitor.

What exactly is the issue here?

You know how to start two instances of Excel. You, presumably, know how to position one instance on each monitor.

You can not, as far as I know, control which instance a workbook opens in when double-clicked but you can ..

(a) click and drag the icon to the title bar of the instance you want, or ..

(b) double click and if it opens in the 'wrong' instance, close it; then go to the other and click on the Office button and it will be at the top of the MRU list and easy to open there, or ..

.. I'm sure there are other ways

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, it appears that what my user wants to do is not possible (as I suspected).
 
Turns out there is a way to do what I want. I got this from a Microsoft Support Tech

To address your concern, I recommend we follow the steps below:

1. Open "My Computer"
2. Click on Tools, then Folder Options.
3. Select the "File Types" tab
4. Scroll down to the XLS extension.
5. Select Advanced
6. Select Open
7. Select Edit
8. In the line that says "Application used to perform action:", please change it to like "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" "%1" /e
9. Uncheck "Use DDE"
10. Do not make any other changes
11. Click OK and click OK again.
(Note if you go back into advanced and back into the open action, you will notice DDE is checked again, however the DDE message is blank; this is fine.)

12. Now scroll down to "XLSX"
13. Please repeat steps 5 through 11 above
14. Click on Close
15. Now, when you open new Microsoft Excel 2007 spreadsheets, they will open separate windows for each Microsoft Excel 2007 spreadsheet that is launched.
Note: Microsoft Excel 2007 spreadsheet windows will open on top of each other, so you will have to drag the windows in order to see them.
