I am having a hard time understanding what I need to know for the test. When it comes to the spanning tree protocol. I understand that it prevents a bridiging loop. And create one active path. Also that it places each port into a forwarding or blocking state. Is there anything else that I might need to know about the Spanning tree protocol.

just be sure to know how it operates and how it will react to a route going down in any configuration.

yes, for CCNA level one has to answer these following in a flash.

what is BPDU?
how the root bridge is elected and the designated port?
which OSI layer does STP fit under?
is STP enabled by default in catalyst x?
