SMS versus Altiris

Hello folks -

A client of mine has about 300 users that are spread across 8-10 different locations. They are looking for a desktop management solution.

Can anyone tell me how does Altiris compare with SMS? In my initial review of both these products, they both seem like good choices. But anyone have any experiences using both these products?

We use both SMS and Altiris. We're using Altiris as a software deployment solution (standard builds for XP) and SMS for patch management. In SMS you also have a hardware/software inventory which is very good. In Altiris you have to purchase something called inventory solution (i think) to get a hardware/software inventory. You can also use SMS to deploy standard XP builds, but we have never used it.

What do you mean by a desktop management solution? Can you be more specific on what the requirements are.
