Do you need a SIP server for IP Trunking or is it just of the IP phones?

Thanks!

You only need to have a SIP server if you are going to use SIP phones or SIP trunks (SES Server for CM3.0+). Depending on the release of your PBX, you can setup H.323 IP trunks from one PBX to another. I have done it with 7 G3si's in various releases, DCS'd together on a 4 digit dialplan.

My CM2.1 has a cust option entry for:

Maximum Administered SIP Trunks: 0 0

So I would have to say it does.

My understanding is that you can run SIP trunks without adding SES, but not SIP based IP phones. The extra SIP server basically acts as the SIP gatekeeper. I will happily stand corrected on that though.

For SIP trunks you need a license, which is why under the custom options both columns are zero.

Best bet is H323 trunks. Failing that, if you're only testing stuff and messing around you can use Asterisk or YATE as a SIP/H323 gateway.

Pete;

I recall hearing that too, but a search of the latest SIP doco on support website states:

Trunking
With support for SIP trunks, an enterprise can connect media servers to a SIP-enabled proxy
server, specifically, an Avaya SIP Enablement Services which can then extend to a third-party
SIP service provider. The trunk support in Communication Manager complies with SIP
standards, specifically IETF RFC 3261, and so interoperates with any SIP-enabled endpoint/
station that also complies with the standard.
In complex configurations with Avaya S8700 series media servers, the signaling-group
properties in Communication Manager must be administered to match in certain ways. For more
information see SIP trunk engineering notes on page 24.

Can anyone advise otherwise.

thanks.

Gotta have a SIP server for SIP trunks. If you look at the signal group setup it will be apparent that the SES is required. You set up your SES as your edge, then that interfaces with the carrier.
